           Earth Friendly Tips

Product Details

I would like to share with you some GREEN cleaning tips.  This information was collected from various sources.  It is also the base of the cleaning products we use.
  • Baking Soda:

Baking soda is mildly abrasive and will scrub without causing scratches.  It is a natural deodorizer...not just in the fridge, but also on carpets.

  • Lemon Juice:

Lemon jucie is a natural deodorant and it also has a slight bleaching effect.  It will remove stains from clothing, aluminum, and porcelain.  If you mix it with salt it will remove silver tarnish.

  • Rubbing alcohol, or Isopropyl Alcohol is a very good disinfectant.
  • Vinegar:

Vinegar will cut grease and remove soap scum.  It kills mold and mildew.  It is great for linoleum or hardwood floors.  It leaves no residue behind.

Not So Earth Friendly

Common Household Cleaning Products

  • Chlorine Bleach:

Chorine bleach contains sodium hypochlorite.  This is a eye and lung irritant.  If it is mixed with either ammonia or acid based cleaning products it releases a very toxic chloramine gas.

  • Ammonia:

Ammonia is commonly used in glass cleaners.  It is a skin and lung irritant.  If ammonia is mixed with chlorine bleach it releases a toxic gas.

  • Disinfectants:

Some disinfectants contain phenol and cresol wich are corrosive.  Excessive exposure can cause fainting, dizziness, and diarrhea.

  • Furniture Polish & Floor Polish:

Some polishes contain nitrobengene.  Exposure can cause vomiting.

These are easy switches from your normal cleaning routine to make it more planet friendly.

  • Candles:

Replace paraffin candles, which are made from crude oil, with cleaner burning beeswax or soy candles.

  • Trash Bags:

Select biodegradable bags or those made with at least 65% recycled content.

  • Lightbulbs:

Compact fluorescent bulbs use one-quarter the energy of incandescent and last ten times longer.

  • Cleaning Stuff:

Buy prepared basics or mix your own using common ingredients.

  • Reusable Cloths:

Flannel cloths, for dusting or wet cleaning, can be washed and re-used.

  • Natural Scrubbers:

Try cellulose or natural sea sponges instead of plastic ones.

Old toothbrushes come in handy for cleaning grout.
